Chicago Media Headlines - October
October 27, 2000
Happy Friday...November sweeps are approaching rapidly, and WLS-TV ABC-7 is in the lead. Their 10p newscast averaged a 13.4 rating/22 share during October, while WMAQ-TV NBC-5 had a 10.0/16, WGN-TV Ch. 9 had a 6.0/10, WFLD-TV Fox-32 had a 5.8/9, and in last place, WBBM-TV CBS-2 had a 5.6/7 (not surprisingly, Carol Marin's broadcast). It looks as though WLS-TV ABC-7 has a shot at taking the sweeps if they can keep their numbers up. Stay tuned...
Another lineup switch at WLIT-FM 93.9 "Lite Rock 93.9." Mike Del Rosso, program director for 10 months, was released yesterday. His duties will be handled by Bob Kaake, program director at WNUA-FM 95.5 "Smooth Jazz 95.5" until a permanent replacement is found. It should be noted that Del Rosso was a key figure in bringing new morning show co-host Paul Peterson to the station. Peterson left WKIE-FM 92.7 "The New 92KissFM" only a few months ago to lead the morning drive-time program. Will Peterson leave now that Del Rosso is gone? We'll see...
Jay Levine and Mary Ann Childers, morning co-hosts on WBBM-TV CBS-2 (and married in real life), extend their broadcast time beginning Monday. They'll be on the air now from 5-7a (a half-hour earlier).
Also...Pete McMurray, evening personality at WCKG-FM 105.9 "The Package," is hosting his annual "Haunted Toga Party" tonight at the Vic Theatre. Buzz Kilman and Piranha Man, two co-hosts of midday personality Jonathan Brandmeier's L.A.-based show, will be joining McMurray tonight as well.
Finally, the Chicago Emmy awards for news and radio broadcasting are being held Saturday night at the Fairmont Hotel (sorry...black-tie invitation-only event). Look for results here Monday morning.
Have a great weekend - see you Monday - right here at drewandjill.com!!
October 26, 2000
Another suspension in Chicago Media - Dan McNeil, afternoon co-host personality at the new WSCR-AM 670 "The Score" has been suspended indefinitely due to conflicts with management over program content. His co-host, Dan Jiggetts, will continue to ride solo from 4-8p until further notice. McNeil's contract runs through April 1st at the station - it is rumored that he's approached WMVP-AM 1000 "ESPN Radio 1000" about possibilities at their station, but no time slots are open at the present. It should be noted that the station's website, www.wscr1160.com, besides still using their old frequency in its address, still has McNeil listed as an afternoon host with Jiggetts. Stay tuned...
More consolidation in the radio industry...Maxx Myrick, operations manager at WVAZ-FM 102.7 "V103," has announced his "retirement/resignation" to pursue other interests. In his place, Elroy Smith, current operations manager for WGCI-FM 107.5, will add "V103" duties to his slate. Both stations are owned by the same company - Clear Channel Communications.
David Kerley, news reporter and anchor at WBBM-FM CBS-2, joined Bryant Gumbel and Jane Clayson on CBS' "The Early Show" this morning from 7-9a. He offered a Chicago perspective on the all-NYC World Series, currently at 3-1 Yankees. If the Yanks win, it will the first triple-crown win since the 1970's.
Have a great Thursday.
October 25, 2000
A couple of things today - WTMX-FM 101.9 "The Mix" is sponsoring a unique contest regarding a top governmental service that each American relies on every day - the Postal Service. Until Friday, listeners of the "Eric and Kathy" morning show (weekdays 5:30-9a) can mail pumpkins to the hosts for two pairs of Dave Matthews tickets (performing in December in the Chicago area). However, the pumpkins cannot be packaged in anything - the address, return address, and postage must all be written/applied to the surface of the pumpkins. The largest and smallest pumpkins to arrive intact by Friday 12n will be awarded with a pair of concert tickets on Monday morning's show. The kicker - the Chicagoland area postal service confirmed on the air before 6a this morning that they are ready for the challenge!
Also...another episode in the Carol Marin WBBM-TV CBS-Ch. 2 saga. Mike McHugh, executive producer of Carol's 10p newscast, has been promoted to assistant news director at the station. His promotion marks another staff loss for Carol's program, hammering another nail in the broadcast's coffin...stay tuned.
p.s. Congrats to Antwaan Randle El - IU's star quarterback - who was voted CNN/SI's offensive player of the week after his stunning performance against Minnesota last Saturday!!
October 24, 2000
Some fun stuff this morning - starting yesterday morning, WXCD-FM 94.7 "CD 94.7" is sponsoring the contest "Survive it and Drive it" on its morning show, hosted by personality Kevin Matthews. In conjunction with Highland Park Ford, five listeners are living in a Ford Focus station wagon this week - with one listener voted out each morning on the show. Votes for ousting listeners can be cast at the station's website - you can also view a live webcam of the participants in the vehicle. Listen Friday morning to Kevin on "CD 94.7" as he broadcasts the morning show LIVE from Highland Park Ford.
Ed Curran, fill-in weatherman at WGN-TV Ch. 9, has been hired as weekend morning and fill-in weatherman at WMAQ-TV NBC-5, succeeding Shelly Monahan, who's leaving the station to join KHQ-TV in Spokane, WA. He started yesterday at the station.
Following John Records Landecker's contract renewal (reported here earlier), WJMK-FM 104.3 "Oldies 104.3" has revised its programming times. As of yesterday, Landecker broadcasts from 5:30-10a, Greg Brown is on from 10a-3p, Scott Miller broadcasts from 3-8p, Dick Biondi speaks from 8-12mid, and Pat O'Kelley heads the overnights from 12mid-5:30a. In all, Landecker now is on a half-hour later and extends his show an hour until 10a, Brown and Miller shifted an hour later, Biondi loses an hour of his show, and O'Kelley adds a half-hour.
Finally, Steve Cochran, midday personality at WGN-AM 720 (on the air from 12:35-3p), will be performing stand-up comedy this weekend at the College of DuPage. Cochran started his media career performing stand-up, so he shouldn't be too wet behind the ears. John Williams, afternoon personality at WGN-AM 720 (on the air from 3-7p), will be hosting the event Saturday night.
Got a news bit? Send me an e-mail! See you tomorrow.
October 23, 2000
Happy Monday...a fun fact about John Records Landecker, morning personality at WJMK-FM 104.3 "Oldies 104.3" - John spent several years at [then] top-40 station WLS-AM 890 in the 1970's. One day, he decided to go out on a limb and support a little-known Chicago band that needed a break. He opened his nightly show with a few words saying hello and let loose a song that he would play each night at the top of the show for over two weeks - at the same time every night. He was determined to make the song, and the band, a hit. It worked and their careers took off. The band? Styx. The song? Lady.
Also reported last week, the nominations for the Air Personality of the Year at the Radio Music Awards coming up in November - a hometown favorite of mine also made the list....Bob and Tom, syndicated from home-station WFBQ-FM 94.7 "Q95" in Indianapolis to over 30 states daily from 5:30-10a central time, were nominated in the Rock Alternative category. You can check them out, as well as listen live on the Web, at their website!!
Finally, another fun fact about two of the nominees for the Air Personality of the Year Award in the Urban Radio category - Doug Banks and Tom Joyner are both nominated in this category. They are both syndicated in Chicago. They both broadcast from their home city of Houston. The interesting part - they are competitors in the morning radio market, yet they are BEST FRIENDS and both broadcast from studios within 20 feet of each other. Their programs are both under the same parent company, so their broadcast booths are just down the hall from each other. Frequently, during commercial breaks, the two have been seen to be chatting "around the watercooler." Make sure you check out Doug on WVJM-FM 102.3 "Hot 102" and Tom on WVAZ-FM 102.7 "V103," broadcasting each weekday morning in Chicago until 10a.
See you tomorrow.
October 20, 2000
Speaking of WXXY-FM 103.1 "The Eighties Channel," Mark Zander hosts "Rock of the 80's" every Sat. night from 7-12mid. The show was only recently switched to WXXY-FM from WCKG-FM 105.9 "The Package." The interesting bit - the show's theme song, dubiously titled "Rock of the 80's," is penned and performed by one of Chicago's favorites - Jim Peterik from the band Survivor. The show's pretty good...check it out.
Also...Phyllis Jones has just signed on to WNND-FM 100.3 "Windy 100" as marketing director.
Renewing his contract for another three years is John Records Landecker, morning drive-time personality at WJMK-FM 104.3 "Oldies 104.3." Funny story - Records is his real middle name - it's his mother's maiden name. Also, he is a member of the Rock N Roll Radio Hall of Fame, inducted after several years in radio (more than a few spent at WLS-AM 890 here in Chicago). You can listen to him each weekday morning from 5-9a.
Finally, the nominations for the Radio Music Awards are out - the awards show is Sat., November 4th in Las Vegas - it will be broadcast live on ABC-TV nationwide. Notable Chicago nominees:
Station of the year (CHR - contemporary hit radio): WBBM-FM 96.3 "B96"
Station of the year (Hot AC - adult contemporary): WTMX-FM 101.9 "The Mix"
Air personality of the year (CHR - contemporary hit radio): Eddie and JoBo, WBBM-FM 96.3 "B96"
Air personality of the year (Hot AC - adult contemporary): Eric and Kathy, WTMX-FM 101.9 "The Mix"
Air personality of the year (Urban): Doug Banks, syndicated here on WVJM-FM 102.3 "Hot 102"
Air personality of the year (Urban): Tom Joyner, syndicated here on WVAZ-FM 102.7 "V103"
Air personality of the year (Rock Alternative): Mancow, WKQX-FM 101.1 "Q101"
See you at I.U. this weekend - enjoy the weather.
October 19, 2000
A few things today...another note on the Joan Cusack show filmed here in Chicago. We spoke about this earlier, but it appears now that Kyle Chandler, former lead in CBS' Chicago-based "Early Edition," has snagged the male lead opposite Cusack in her new half-hour sitcom, slated to be a mid-season replacement for ABC. Lucky for Chandler...he won't have to sell his million-dollar home in Lincoln Park now.
Also...just recently announced - Lyn Taylor, weekend radio personality at WXXY-FM 103.1 "The Eighties Channel," has officially been promoted to weekday mornings on the station, opposite Robert Murphy. The open position resulted from JoAnn Genette leaving the station a month ago to join WLIT-FM 93.9 "Lite FM." WXXY-FM's morning drive-time program, "Murphy in the Morning," airs weekdays from 6-10a. Taylor formerly hosted Saturdays and Sundays from 10a-3p. Kudos to her...
I was speaking with a friend recently about how WGCI-FM 107.5 topped the ratings - and thus, can bill top premiums for advertising revenue in their various time slots. An average Chicago station airs between 15-18 minutes of commercial time each hour - for WGCI-FM, they air between 22-25 minutes each hour (almost 1 minute of commercial for every minute of talk/music). Interesting note in a current radio industry magazine...WCKG-FM 105.9 "The Package" recently ran 38 commercials in a row (at one time) during Howard Stern's syndicated morning show, which airs weekdays from 6-11a on the station. The 38 commercials ran 18 1/2 minutes - excessive? Maybe. For anyone who didn't radio surf during that time, pure devotion to Howard.
See you tomorrow.
October 18, 2000
Keeping in line with the recent release of the Arbitron ratings - the fifth Annual Achievement in Radio Awards was held downtown during lunchtime yesterday. 35 awards were given out in an array of radio categories - the following are the winners:
Best talent (music station): "Crazy" Howard McGee, WGCI-FM 107.5
Best talent (news, talk station): Spike O'Dell, WGN-AM 720
Best morning show (music station): Eddie and JoBo, WBBM-FM 96.3 "B96"
Best morning show (news, talk, sports station): Spike O'Dell, WGN-AM 720
Best midday show (music station): "Wild" Bill Garcia, WUSN-FM 99.5 "US99"
Best midday show (news, talk, sports station): Steve Cochran, WGN-AM 720
Best afternoon show (music station): Sludge, WKQX-FM 101.1 "Q101"
Best afternoon show (news, talk, sports station): Roe Conn and Garry Meier, WLS-AM 890 "NewsTalk 89"
Best evening show (music station): Tanya, WTMX-FM 101.9 "The Mix"
Best evening show (news, talk, sports station): Harry Teinowitz and Spike Manton, WMVP-AM 1000 "ESPN Radio 1000."
Best special: "Remembering Bob (Collins)," WGN-AM 720
Best short-form: "Annoying Music Show," WBEZ-FM 91.5
Lifetime Achievement: Dick Orbin, previously heard on WCFL-FM decades ago
It should be noted that "Crazy" Howard McGee snagged the best talent (music station) award for the third straight year. Also, Steve Cochran's award is especially sweet for him, as he just recently returned (less than a year ago) to Chicago's airwaves after a 3-year absence. He most recently hosted mornings at Detroit's WKQI-FM 95.5 "Q95-5"
Finally, as reported here several times before, Carol Marin's 10p newscast on WBBM-Ch. 2 is closer to its demise - thanks to top management interviewing new candidates for her anchor position. The latest possibility for her replacement is Asha Blake, a former co-host of NBC's "Later Today." The ironic part of the interview process - they brought her to the station for interviewing - no doubt starting more rumors as to the near-future revamp of the 10p newscast.
Have a great day.
October 17, 2000
Hey guys...a few things today. First, Bob Collins' Way is being dedicated at 11a this morning on a section of East Illinois Street downtown that runs alongside WGN's Tribune Tower Headquarters, where Collins' used to broadcast from WGN-AM 720 every morning from 5-9a. Collins died several months ago in a tragic plane accident in north suburban Zion. Click here to listen to the ceremony LIVE on WGN-AM. People expected in attendance include Mayor Daley, Christine Collins (Bob's widow), and Governor Ryan.
Speaking of WGN-AM, the summer ratings recently were released. For the first time ever, WGN-AM dropped to third place, behind WBBM-FM 96.3 "B96" and WGCI-FM 107.5. October 16, 2000
Good morning - 6:20am (numbers for quarter close are due at 8a) - so...let's see - reported here on Friday, not only did WKIE-FM 92.7 "The New92KissFM" and WXXY-FM 103.1 "The Eighties Channel" give away Bon Jovi tickets this past weekend (the band is performing Nov. 20 at Allstate Arena) - but I also found out that WLUP-FM 97.9 "The Loop" gave tickets away for this show AND Sammy Hagar EVERY HOUR all weekend. Talk about a band having popularity in the city - I can't remember the last time three different radio stations (all different formats as well) were giving the same prize away at the same time.
Last thing - the Bonneville International Corporation Radio Group Volunteer Fair was held Sunday afternoon at Navy Pier. The fair offered the opportunity to sign up and volunteer for over 60 groups that serve metropolitan Chicago. WTMX-FM 101.9 "The Mix," WNND-FM 100.3 "Windy 100," and WLUP-FM 97.9 "The Loop" co-sponsored the fair. Some of the radio personalities in attendance: Mike Roberts and Barry Keefe from "The Mix"; and Scott Childers and John Symons from "Windy 100." Overall, it was a great turnout. Speaking to Barry Keefe, news director at WTMX-FM, he said that he was pleased with the overall turnout, but was disappointed that some charities packed up early after running out of pamphlets and flyers. For more information on how to get involved, call 312.946.1019.
Happy Monday - enjoy the Kennedy.
October 13, 2000
Happy Friday the 13th...well, as reported yesterday, Roe and Garry are now on the mike SOLO for two of their five hours on the air daily (heard on WLS-AM 890 "NewsTalk 89"). Yesterday was the first day of this new (hopefully temporary) arrangement and it just didn't work with the listeners [or the hosts]. Hopefully, the duo will be on the air together for the full five hours, and compensated for that amount of time as well. Stay tuned...
In other radio news, the competition for morning show guests has been heating up. This morning, both WKIE-FM 92.7 "The New 92KissFm" and WTMX-FM 101.9 "The Mix" were heavily promoting a morning show guest caller by the name of Jon Bon Jovi. According to the host promos, he was appearing on each station's show by phone between 7:30-8a (presumably, each station did not simultaneously know of the other's promo for the same time slot). However, due to mix-ups/problems not known to me yet, he only appeared on WKIE-FM with morning host Melissa Forman at 8a. Eric Ferguson and Kathy Hart, morning hosts on "The Mix," made no mention of why he didn't end up on their show. However, they covered perfectly without so much as a lapse in thought, successfully completing a twenty-minute phone interview/conversation with Richard Simmons that was one of the best genuinely-funny radio bits I've heard in a long time.
Finally, another news bit about WKIE-FM and it's sister station, WXXY-FM 103.1 "The Eighties Channel." Both stations broadcast from the same studios on the 16th floor of the Neiman Marcus building on North Michigan. Both stations have weekend promotion giveaways on a regular basis. THIS WEEKEND, it just so happens that both stations are giving away the same prize - tickets to see BON JOVI at their upcoming Chicago concert appearance. Kudos to the marketing/promotions department cutting overhead (wink, wink). Make sure you tune in this weekend...
Enjoy your weekend - see you Monday.
October 12, 2000
More on a topic reported here earlier - Roe and Garry are the weekday afternoon hosts at WLS-AM 890 "NewsTalk 89", heard live 2-6p with taped segments of their first 90 min. heard from 6-7p. Since WLS moved their show up one hour (it used to be 3-7p) due to conflicts with Dr. Laura's radio/TV broadcasts, the station has been trying to get an extra hour out of the afternoon duo FOR FREE.
The latest in the saga - decided by WLS management just yesterday - Roe Conn will now be on the air SOLO from 2-3p, the team will share the mike from 3-6p, and Garry Meier will broadcast SOLO from 6-7p. Clearly, Roe and Garry are quite upset at the arrangement, both for financial issues and for figuring out why management is breaking up a 5-yr old pairing of the two that has produced consistently high ratings. Could a "strike" of sorts be in the near future for Roe and Garry? Stay tuned...
October 11, 2000
Here's the scoop - apparently, CBS has just been dragging their feet in all mediums here in Chicago. First, the Carol Marin saga (see below) - then the sale of WMAQ-AM 670 to WSCR-AM 1160 "The Score," which effectively eliminated 24-hour news radio competition - and now Bears broadcasting woes. On Sunday, unless you were under a hole, you know that power was lost in the entire Loop for about 6 hours including the building that WBBM-AM 780 "NewsRadio 78" operates from. As soon as power came on, veteran reporters were upset to find that the CBS executives would not let them break into the Bears broadcast to report on the power outage - a service that many Chicagoans needed at the time (radio news).
Mary Dixon, morning news anchor on WXRT-FM 93.1 (a CBS-owned station), was recently sent out to Hollywood to interview stars of CBS' new fall lineup...
Finally, the Joan Cusack show, to be filmed here at Chicago Studio City, 5660 W. Taylor, Stage 2, is a mid-season replacement for ABC. The show revolves around Cusack, a single teacher, and her relationships with her close friends. Tickets are free and available by calling 773.473.8224 - the show is taped on Friday evenings. Jill and I have acquired tickets for the lone November taping, but I think there's still tickets left for the Dec. 1 and 8 tapings. Promotions for the show have been picking up, with several TV stations mentioning the tapings. The main promo I'm aware of has been with "Entertainment Chicago," a daily entertainment report on Chicago's entertainment happenings heard every weekday at 6:10a with "Eric and Kathy" on WTMX-FM 101.9 "The Mix."
Speaking of Joan Cusack - it's her birthday today. She has the distinct honor of sharing the birthday with my sister Sarah. Happy birthday Sis.
Enjoy the weather while it lasts.
October 9, 2000
Hey guys...hope you had a nice weekend. Just a short note today - rumors are flying that Dan Rather, CBS network news anchor for over a decade (reporter for over two decades), will be let go from the network soon. Apparently, Carol Marin (as reported below) is not the only CBS anchor seen in Chicago having trouble with ratings. Rather's 6pm EST newcasts has always lagged behing NBC and ABC (Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings are their respective flagship newscast anchors) - and change has been rumored to be coming soon...I'll keep you posted.
Have a great Monday - see you tomorrow.
October 6, 2000
A few things for your Friday morning...Jonathon Brandmeier, midday personality at WCKG-FM 105.9 "The Package" has been offered a five-year, multimillion dollar deal to take over the afternoon shift at that station beginning next July. Sources have said that station management will most likely not renew Steve Dahl's contract, current afternoon personality. Dahl has experienced conflict in the past with management over show topics and guidelines.
With the station's best-case scenario becoming reality, Howard Stern would anchor the station in the morning (syndicated from NYC), Kevin Matthews would do middays (he is the current morning man for WXCD-FM 94.7 "CD 94.7"), and Brandmeier would be the afternoon guy. One should remember that Brandmeier has dominated Chicago airwaves in the past, spending more than a decade in the mornings at WLUP-FM 97.9 "The Loop." A decision from the station could be made in the next month...
Also....Tracy Butler, morning weather meteorologist at ABC-Ch. 7, anchors weather for ABC's Good Morning America today from 7-9a.
George Boswell, former cast member of CBS's flop "Big Brother" and Rockford, IL native, is featured on the "Spike O'Dell Radio Program" this morning from 7-9a on WGN-AM 720.
Finally, speaking of Kevin Matthews, he's got a new sports contributor to the show. Bruce Wolf, current morning sports anchor at FOX's WFLD-Ch. 32, assumes the new role of "Chet Chitchat," who will contribute weekly to the show.
Enjoy the weekend weather. See you Monday.
October 5, 2000
The biggest [and only] headline - John Callaway, former host of "Chicago Tonight" on WTTW-Ch. 11 PBS, has resigned as commentator for the WBBM-Ch. 2 Carol Marin 10pm newscast. He is now among a handful of television and production/direction personalities to leave the show within the last few weeks. Callaway sighted the show's gradual change to a more traditional news format (shock-value news reporting) as his main reason for leaving. His departure provides one more nail in the newscast's coffin. As reported here earlier, the show's director and several producers have also left their positions on the newscast at the station to pursue "other interests." On a last note on this subject today....Marin, who has said her contract gives her an option to leave if management wants to change the tenor of the program, [not surprisingly] had no comment Wednesday. Can an anchor switch be in the works soon?...Stay tuned.
October 3, 2000
Hi guys...Happy October. Headlining today - another Carol Marin staffer has called it quits...further speculating on the decline and demise of the breakthrough WBBM-Ch. 2 10pm newscast with Carol Marin. Danice Kern, who worked with Marin at WMAQ-TV NBC-5 for over 10 years, announced her resignation recently from the news production team at Ch. 2. No word on a replacement for her, but she is not the first, nor the second, Carol Marin team member to resign in recent weeks. Will Carol still be on the air in two months?
Irene Mojica, formerly at WGCI-FM 107.5 for over two decades, has rejoined the Chicago airwaves at WUBT-FM 103.5, "The Beat," as a weekend nightly host on Saturdays and Sundays.
Ramblin' Ray and Trish, the morning team at WUSN-FM 99.5 "US 99," broadcast live all week from Nashville, site of the Country Music Awards airing tomorrow night. Tune in for interviews and bits with some of today's leading country stars...
Finally, Jeanne Sparrow, midday personality at WGCI-FM 107.5, has joined WMAQ-TV NBC-5's morning show to file entertainment reports on Hollywood and celebrity happenings. Her position fills the vacant spot left when Bill Zwecker (Sun-Times columnist) switched entertainment reporting to WFLD-TV Fox-32 a few weeks ago.
Go Sox!!
